Lots of fun with The Perfect Cure Ceili Band

We had lots of fun with The Perfect Cure Ceili Band on their 2019 Tour of Devon.

It all started on the afternoon of Saturday, 14th September 2019 at the Tap House Bar in Newton Abbot.  Ten musicians assembled in the pub at around 2 pm and shared a few tunes over the next two hours.  We played a variety of tunes from Ireland, England and France, on a variety of instruments, including fiddle, banjo, guitar, melodeon, recorder, concertina, and penny whistle.  A small group of friends and pub locals enjoyed listening to the music.

Bickington Ceili

Later we moved to the Bickington Village Hall for the evening ceili, where we were dismayed to find no water and no electricity supply!  The water mains were being replaced in Bickington and all the houses had been given temporary water supplies, but no-one had thought to provide water for the village hall!  Gwilym from the village hall committee did a sterling job carrying bottles of drinking water over to keep us hydrated and buckets of water for the toilets and hand washing.  The electricity supply was easily sorted by putting some money in the meter, so we were ready to go. It had all given me a few minutes of stress, but they were soon forgotten when the music started!

Three sets of dancers enjoyed the evening, dancing nine different sets, plus a waltz, to the lively music of The Perfect Cure Ceili Band.  We also enjoyed delicious cakes made by The Pharmacy Café in the interval with cups of tea and coffee.  I took a few photos during the evening.  They came out a bit grainy as the light was low, but I have added some of them anyway, as I was too busy enjoying myself to remember to take any for the rest of the weekend!

Colyford Ceili

The next day all the gear and all the action moved to Colyford Memorial Hall for the second ceili of the weekend.  Four sets of people danced eight different sets during the afternoon.  In the interval we drank more tea and finished up the cakes.  Afterwards, several of us went over to the re-opened Wheelwright Inn and enjoyed a nice meal in their restaurant.

Many thanks to everyone who took part in the weekend and helped in many different ways. Particular thanks to Jill Elliot, Mark Wallis and Dave Lambert from The Perfect Cure Ceili Band for giving us such great music to listen to and dance to all weekend. The Perfect Cure often play at venues around Bristol, Somerset and Gloucester. Check out where you can dance to them next here.
